In Waking

Pondail stirred strangely in his sleep. Darkness swirling around him, making him toss and turn. He saw his kin and himself fighting a fiery creature-! He hit it-! Stunned the silly beast- but sustained a burn! Be that didn't make him any less proud! Pondail almost smiled- but then something whizzed towards him- an orb- red and white- and then-!

Pondail jerked awake, and slowly opened his eyes. Noticing first of all the ache in his body. Although- as memories returned to him, he should’ve felt a LOT worse… He was burned if he recalled right- and then…

Faces swam into his vision- and Pondail’s eyes shot open, heart pounding! The human-! The trainer of fiery creature- and atop of her head, a reptilian hatchling, watching him curiously.

“Welcome back…” the girl spoke gently, smiling. She gently stroked the back of his head with one of her fingers, while the rest of her hand cradled him. He blinked around slowly, still lost as he gazed at his wrapped arm and a familiar fiery creature, but this one was a lot bigger- He was a few feet away, watching him with a knowing look- like he’d been the one to battle the pondail before. The respect in the fire types eyes was strange, and Pondail turned away and stared at the trainer.

“I know it’s a lot to take in, but you were a fantastic battler...” she smiled again, stroking his head again in praise, and Pondail closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling. “I’d like you to join my team…” she said with a triumphant grin, which only slipped as he stared silently up at her.

She’d ‘caught’ him, he realised belatedly! He – a low-level pondail – never thought he he’d get the chance to have his own trainer! He nodded his head slowly, while he inwardly cheered! This was what he’d been hoping for since the day he hatched-! Finally, he could train hard, and grow stronger without the fear of falling prey to a stronger pokemon, because this human would be there with him, protecting him every step of the way.

Vron grinned, leaning down and nuzzling the pondail’s cheek in a small hug. “Thank you so much… and I- hope you don’t mind, but I’d like to call you Gex…”

‘Gex’ didn’t smile or wave his hands in joy, but instead nodded again- in quiet glee. 'A nickname!' He thought wistfully-! He had a nickname.
